Sunset at Keyhole Rock

Pfeiffer Beach, Big Sur, CA

Chasing Sunset Through the Keyhole

Some sunsets are beautiful…others are unforgettable.

Pfeiffer Beach was the second kind.

Watching the sun set through Keyhole Rock at Pfeiffer Beach in Big Sur falls firmly into the second category.

If you’re willing to navigate the winding road and plan your timing just right, and pack your patience, Pfeiffer Beach rewards you with one of the most iconic sunset experiences on the California coast. Tucked just off Highway 1 in Big Sur, this beach doesn’t advertise itself. There’s no big sign, no scenic overlook pull-out screaming for attention. Just a narrow road slipping into the trees — and, at the end of it, one of the most unforgettable sunsets on the California coast.

The Drive: Getting There Is Part of the Adventure

Pfeiffer Beach doesn’t announce itself from Highway 1. In fact, many people drive right past it without realizing what they missed.

Plug “Pfeiffer Beach” into your favorite map app and enjoy the cruise along Hwy 1, stopping at many of the POI’s, turnouts and view points along the way. Follow your map as it turns off Highway 1 where the road quickly narrows and winds through redwood forest, with tight turns and occasional pull-offs.

This short drive sets the tone — it feels secret, quiet, and a little wild. Take it slow, enjoy the scenery, and don’t rush. It’s about 2 miles to the parking lot. You’ll know you’re close when you cross the low water crossing and make your way through the State Parks entrance kiosk. Find a place to park and follow the sound of the ocean, then Pfeiffer Beach reveals itself.

The sand here is different — streaked with deep purples from natural mineral deposits — and the shoreline feels wild and unfinished. Out in the water stands Keyhole Rock, solid and weathered, with a perfectly placed arch carved by time and waves.

This is where you start waiting.

Parking, Fees & Logistics

There’s a small parking fee to access Pfeiffer Beach, $15 by cash, card and even by phone app, paid when you arrive. It’s minimal and well worth it.

Parking is limited and fills fast near sunset, especially on weekends. It’s best to arrive early — more time to explore, less stress, better views. Cell service is poor. Your phone is best used as a camera to capture the beauty of this hidden gem. Remember to take only pictures and leave only footprints.

Timing the Sunset Stop

Although known as a “sunset-specific stop”, Pfeiffer Beach has much to offer. Get there early, at least 60 - 90 minutes but the earlier the better. Enjoy the beach, take in the beauty, check out the purple sand (another one of Pfeiffer Beach’s treats), have a picnic, relax and wait for the show — timing matters.

In late winter through early spring, the setting sun lines up perfectly with Keyhole Rock, sending beams of golden light straight through the arch and across the water. It’s brief, dramatic, and absolutely worth planning for. The light shifts constantly, and some of the best moments happen before the sun actually touches the horizon.

Don’t rush the magic.

Why Keyhole Rock Is So Special

Keyhole Rock isn’t just a photogenic sea stack — it’s a rare combination of geology and light.

As the sun lowers, the rock’s natural arch frames the light perfectly, sending glowing rays across the surf. Add in the rugged cliffs, crashing waves, and Pfeiffer Beach’s unique purple sand, and the entire scene feels almost otherworldly.

It’s dramatic, peaceful, and humbling all at once — the kind of place that makes you stop talking and just watch.

Tips & Tricks for the Best Experience

Need Food?
If you’re planning to arrive early, stop at one of Big Sur’s Deli’s to pick up some food, chips and drinks. Here’s a few of my faves.

  • Bear & Flag Roadside - If you’re leaving Carmel Valley to head south be sure to grab some of the best food and drinks at the Bear & Flag Roadside. Their fantastic deli menu and great beer & wine offerings will have you enjoying everything about your trip, including the food.

  • Big Sur Deli - Just south of Sycamore Canyon Rd., Big Sur Deli has you covered for beach treats with a full deli, drinks, snacks and souvenirs. You can also stop at the Big Sur Taphouse just next door.

  • Big Sur River Inn General Store - If travelling south from the Carmel Area your first stop in Big Sur might be the River Inn General Store. They’ve also got a full deli, drinks, snacks and souveniers.

Arrive Early
Parking is limited, especially on weekends and during peak seasons. Early arrival also gives you more flexibility to move along the beach.

Beach Facilities
There are pit toilets and garbage cans at the parking lot. Pack out what you pack in, use the facilities and not the beach. This is a dog friendly beach. Please use proper pet etiquette and pick up after your furry friends and PLEASE deposit the poop bags in the garbage cans, not on the beach.

Watch the Tides
High tide can reduce the amount of walkable beach and limit angles near Keyhole Rock. Check tide charts ahead of time if photography is your goal.

Dress in Layers
Even on warm days, coastal temperatures drop quickly after sunset. A jacket or hoodie makes the experience much more comfortable.

Photographers, Bring the Right Gear

  • A tripod if you’re photographing

  • A wide-angle lens for capturing the arch and sky. Although our phones do a pretty good job of capturing our memories.

  • A blanket or low chair if you plan to linger

Stay Aware of Waves
Entering the ocean waters is tempting. Be aware of the dangers of the ocean. Keep a close eye on the ocean, family and friends. The water is COLD, there are often under-currents, rogue “sneaker waves” waves are real here and help is a long way away. Keep a safe distance from the water, especially while focusing on photos.

A Sunset Worth Chasing

Sunset at Pfeiffer Beach isn’t flashy or crowded with boardwalks and cafes. It’s raw, quiet, and unforgettable. When the light finally pours through Keyhole Rock and the ocean turns gold, time slows, the “The door opens” — it burns an unforgettable sunset into your memory.

If Big Sur has a signature moment, this might just be it.
